City Cemetery Guide Thu, Oct 14th, 2010 12:00:00 am
Historic Carrollton Cemetery Walking Guide now available
The Carrollton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Carrollton Main Street Program are excited to announce the release of the Carrollton City Cemetery Walking Guide. This new brochure created, researched and designed by both organizations is now available to the public at no cost. "We're very excited to make this booklet available to people who want to visit the historic cemetery in the heart of Carrollton," said CVB Executive Director Jonathan Dorsey. "Many people have an interest in historic cemeteries, from historians to photographers to family members of those buried there." "This is just another way to help educate both the community and visitors about the history of our town and give us an opportunity to introduce to them these key people who have had such an influence in shaping both our downtown and our city." said Main Street Director Jessica Reynolds.
The walking guide contains information and images about 15 different people of interest that have been buried at the cemetery including Congressman W. C. Adamson, Confederate Col. William Curtis, C.M. Tanner, Edwin Sharpe and Georgia Price. A page of Markers and Emblems helps educate new tourists of the important role that symbols and emblems play in funerary art. Although the walking guide tells many stories of historical figures in Carroll County its focus remains as a heritage tourism resource with an educational focus. This guide is designed to give a taste of what the citizens of Carrollton have had to offer. The fruits of their labor can be seen all around us in family stores, a busy downtown, hospitals, state parks and even street signs. We are hopeful the guide will also augment and support the cemetery improvement efforts of other groups and individuals.
The walking guide will be included in "heritage packs" which visitors can receive at the Carrollton Visitors Bureau. The guide is now available at the Log Cabin Visitor Center, 102 North Lakeshore Drive, Carrollton, The Carrollton Main Street office at 115 Rome Street in Carrollton, City Hall, and the downtown retail stores.
