| Carrolll County Community Theatre presents "I'm Not Rappaport" | ||
Carroll County Community Theatre presents I’m Not Rappaport June 12-14 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center Theatre. Directed by Gerald Byrd. A Tony Award Winning Play by Herb Gardner: Inspired by two elderly men Gardner met in New York City’s Central Park, it focuses on Nat Moyer (Mel Slazyk), a cantankerous Jew and Midge Carter (Larry Powell), a feisty African American, who spend their days sitting on a bench, trying to mask the horrible realities of aging, mainly through the tall tales that Nat spins. Additional roles are played by Georgia Keene, Tywone Reese, Bruce Gonsalves, Ben Sasser, and Rudolph Chism The play touches on several issues, including society’s treatment of the aging, the difficulties dealing with adult children who think they know what's best for their parents, and the dangers that lurk in urban areas. Its title comes from an old vaudeville joke, a variation of which evolved into dialogue between the two protagonists: · Nat: Hey, Rappaport! I haven't seen you in ages. How have you been? · Midge: I'm not Rappaport. · Nat: Rappaport, what happened to you? You used to be a short fat guy, and now you're a tall skinny guy. · Midge: I'm not Rappaport. · Nat: Rappaport, you used to be a young guy with a beard, and now you're an old guy with a mustache. · Midge: I'm not Rappaport. · Nat: Rappaport, how has this happened? You used to be a cowardly little white guy, and now you're a big imposing black guy. · Midge: I'm not Rappaport. · Nat: And you changed your name, too! An opening night reception will be provided by Aramark with the assistance of Delta Chi Fraternity. The reception theme will be New York’s Central Park. Tickets are $10. | BRADSHAW, COVERT AND HARMON EXHIBITS at Carrollton Cultural Arts Center
PRESS RELEASE June 2008 BRADSHAW, COVERT AND HARMON EXHIBITS While visiting Bayeux, France several years ago as a teacher in the University of West Georgia’s summer study abroad program, Cameron Covert was introduced to Gordon Bradshaw and later visited his nearby château. Their friendship has evolved into an exhibition of Covert’s ceramics and Bradshaw’s paintings and ceramic sculpture which can be viewed in the Roush Family Gallery of the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center, June 6-29 with an opening reception on Friday, June 6th from 5 until 7 in the front lobby. The works of the two friends blend together as Mr. Bradshaw will exhibit abstracted landscapes of the countryside around his home in Normandy, together with non-figurative sculptures depicting baroque color, energy and openness to the environment. Mr. Covert’s work will include examples of his unique process of applying Xerox™ Laser transfers to his forms, especially images of Japanese firemen from the Edo Period. These flamboyant images contain hints of the illegal tattoos the firemen loved but were forbidden to display except once a year during a special parade. In addition Covert will display ceramic work fired in soda, wood and gas kilns, also influenced by several of his visits to Japan. The Bayeux Tapestry is housed in a museum in the small town of Bayeux in Normandy, this glorious tapestry – nearly 1,000 years old and 230 feet long- is the sole survivor of an art form that was once widely produced. The Bayeux Tapestry relates the invasion of England by William of Normandy and his victory at the battle of Hastings in 1066. “Artifacts of Vision” by David Harmon is on display in the Galleria, Mr. Harmon is currently a professor of art at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah Campus and has also taught at several colleges and universities nationwide. He has been drawing in color since 1980 from life or his "seen scenes" he has amassed a collection of drawings depicting his everyday surroundings. There are several images of a studio or living room filled with souvenirs and memorabilia. The collection reflects of bits and pieces of Art-i-facts for personal use as an artist or instructor. The exhibit is colorful insight into is personal surroundings and thought processes. Mr. Bradshaw and Mr. Covert will be at the reception to welcome friends and guests. Their works are mostly for sale, with a few in private collections or on loan for the exhibit. Galleries are open Monday – Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-3pm and Sunday 1-4 pm. | “Drawings” by Janice M. Pittsley
The Roush Family Gallery of the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center presents “Drawings” by Janice M. Pittsley, Professor/School of Art, Arizona State University, Foundation Drawing Coordinator. Her work combines a variety of traditional drawing materials: graphite, charcoal, pastels, colored pencil, and erasers. She says her intention is to use their diverse physical qualities to create a harmonious and engaging material presence. The processes and the materials she uses reflect visual contrasts: the hard edge achieved with sharpened pencil combined with the blurred edge of pastel, the opacity of many layers with the transparency of one, the somber palette of charcoal with the pure pigment of pastel combine allowing representation and abstraction meet. Ms. Pittsley says, “My drawings are developed from a variety of sources and interests. For the past nineteen years I have lived in the desert Southwest. The vast spaces and elegant simplicity of the desert landscape have influenced the vocabulary of form and space in my drawings. Ongoing study of traditional Eastern art and culture continue to be important influences. In particular, Eastern perspectives on nature, landscape, space, and beauty have expanded my visual vocabulary and conceptual realm.” The Galleria will host the Carrollton Artist Guild’s spring exhibit “Monochromatic.” The intention of this display is to explore the possibilities of one color. Perfect for watercolors, the meaning of the title is to stretch the base color from pure, straight out of the tube pigment to the color of the surface. Imagine Red watercolor from the tube watered down until it becomes the paper only. From dark red to medium to light red, to pinks- the white paper beginning to show through, to tinted shades until it becomes just the white of the paper. Black and white photography is another prime example, charcoal sketches, or pencil drawings are monochromatic, simply one on one. The simplicity of “the one” leaves room for imagination to seek its own interpretation. The Guild will host a reception in the Galleria on Friday night, April 4th from five until seven p.m. The public is invited to come meet the artists and view their work. Galleries are open Monday – Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-3pm and Sunday 1-4 p.m. For more information call the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center at 770-838-1083. |

| Journeys of Textiles, Earth and Fire exhibit in the Roush Family Gallery | ||
The Roush Family Gallery of the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center presents “Journeys of Textiles, Earth and Fire,” a body of new works by Sally Austin and Don McWhorter. The exhibit which is open to the public will run March 7 – 28, 2008 with an opening reception Friday, March 7, from five until seven p.m. The public is invited to come meet the artist and discuss their work. The “journeys” of California native, Sally Austin and lifelong Carroll County, Georgia resident, Don McWhorter led the two to meet in Nashville, Tennessee. They quickly realized their mutual appreciation for an eclectic taste of the visual arts, music, writing and life in general. The two found in each other a friendship that encouraged and inspired not only each other’s art but their spirits as well. Now, after a few years of a long distance relationship, the two share each other’s studio space; summers in Grand Rapids, Michigan and winters in Carrollton, Georgia. Sally’s work, inspired by nature and personal experiences, bursts with vibrant colors and textures. They are created by manipulating, coiling, wrapping and fraying silks, vintage and other fine fabrics collected from around the world. Don will be showing many works never exhibited before. Assembled groupings including stone and clay resemble the cliff dwellings and landscapes of the southwest United States. Included will be some miniatures in porcelain and altered large stoneware vessels. Both artists have recently been recognized for their latest works. Sally has received an ‘Invitation to exhibit’ at the prestigious Cherry Creek Festival in Denver Colorado this summer and Don recently won the judges Award at the Festival of the Masters Art Show at Disneyworld and the Artigras Festival of the Arts in Jupiter, Florida. The Galleria of the Cultural Arts Center will host a premier solo exhibit by Suzanne Smith, entitled “three acre pond, a watercolor collective.” Suzanne is a Tennessee native, where she graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelors of Fine Art in 1991. She has called Carrollton home since 1995, and has been a long time member of the Carrollton Artist Guild. Working with several water mediums, she favors watercolors. Her works reflect the warmth of country living with rural sophistication. Suzanne will also be at the reception to greet friends and answer questions. Most of her works are for sale, with a few in private collections on loan for the exhibit. For more information call the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center at 770-838-1083. The Carrollton Cultural Arts Center is a facility of the Carrollton Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. |
